Come to Krohn Conservatory to Celebrate
"75 Years of Green Excellence"
The Anniversary Floral Show, March 15 – March 30, 2008
Whether coming for the first time, or visiting again and again over the years, visitors agree that the the Krohn Conservatory is one of Cincinnati's most favorite park destinations. The 2008 Spring Floral Show, titled "75 Years of Green Excellence" celebrates Krohn's many years as a beloved public conservatory.
Greenhouses have been part of the Eden Park landscape since the 1880s. The first Eden Park greenhouses were strictly for growing plants, and in 1902, a new greenhouse—one designed for public displays—was opened. In 1930, the Park Board decided to replace the old buildings with a modern greenhouse conservatory. The new building was designed in the Art Deco style, and the opened to the general public on Sunday, March 26, 1933. That December the Conservatory began a holiday tradition of exhibiting its Educational Christmas Tree, a tree decorated with ornaments made of natural materials and crafted by Conservatory horticulturists. On April 30, 1937, the Board officially named the new conservatory the Irwin M. Krohn Conservatory, in honor of Irwin Krohn's 25 years of service on the Board of Park Commissioners.
Today Krohn Conservatory houses a collection of more than 1,000 different species of plants in six permanent display areas. The Tropical House and Palm House are like mini rainforests. There are ferns, chocolate, vanilla, and guava in the Tropical House, and palm trees, vines, and a 20-foot waterfall in the Palm House. The Floral Display House or Show House has a collection of citrus trees that frame the changing seasonal exhibits, the 6 Floral Shows. The Bonsai Collection features beautiful tiny trees, many of them in peak seasonal color. The Orchid House, recreated by a major renovation in 2004, displays many species of orchids in perfect bloom, displayed within a naturalistic setting.
